Dry Needling
This technique involves inserting thin needles into tight bands of muscle, also known as "trigger points." Dry needling removes these knots in muscles and enables improved range of motion, reduced stiffness, and reduced pain.
How Does It Work?
Dry Needling works by mechanically stimulating knots in muscle, causing a local twitch response and a release of tension. Think of this a a "reset" button for a trigger point.
- Side Effects: Serious adverse responses are quite rare. Normal side effects include soreness and bruising. Usually, these symptoms go away in 1-3 days.
- Michael's Take Dry Needling is the fastest, most effective treatment available for resolution of muscle trigger points.
- Experience
- Michael has been certified in dry needling through the Institute of Advanced Musculoskeletal Treatments(IAMT) since 2019
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy includes techniques for joint mobilization, manipulation, manual stretching, medicupping, and release of mucular knots.
Uses
Manual therapy is used to reduce pain and improve range of motion. Many patients benefit from mobilization to a stiff joint before initiating exercise.
- Michael's Take Manual therapy is essential in patient care to modulate pain and facilitate greater benefit from corrective exercises.
- Experience
- Michael has extensive manual therapy experience including a clinical rotation under a manual therapy fellow.
Functional Movement Analysis
We use a system of functional movement assessment that allows us not only to identify the painful tissue, but to unmask the root cause of the dysfunction. Simply put, we are able to move beyond just treating the symptoms and ensure that the issue does not come back.
Examination Tool
The selective functional movement assessment (SFMA) was developed by a group of clinicians seeking to identify root causes of muscular dysfunction in athletes. Michael is certified in the system by Functional Movement Systems, having completed both levels of FMS's certification program.
- Michael's Take
- The SFMA is the most comprehensive tool for movement analysis available and is performed on each patient. This is particulaly useful in examining weight lifters, runners, golfers, and throwing athletes.
- Why Is This Important?
- Unfortunately, the world of musculoskeletal medicine revolves around treating symptoms (steroid shot, medication etc). We believe that our duty to the patient includes not only treatment of pain, but the correction of the movement patterns that caused the injury.
Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Program
Titleist Performance Institute was founded in Oceanside, California as a performance enhancement facility for professional golfers.
As well as being certified through TPI, Michael is a former collegiant golfer. He has has a love of treating his fellow golfers not only for injuries but also for performance enhancement. His TPI education includes 3 certifications through TPI's "medical" track as well as an additional certification in training golfers to increase clubhead speed/driving distance.
Injury Assessment and TreatmentTPI assessment allows us to identify the cause of many golfer's injuries and correct the movement patterns that cause them.
Performance Enhancement
In addition to treating injury, we provide both manual therapy and corrective exercise to improve flexibility, efficiency, and strength. The result is a golfer that has both a healthy and efficient body.
Michael's Take
Improving a golfers performance is one of my favorite aspects of my job. As someone with an extensive background in competitive golf, the value of a healthy and efficient body is not lost on me. There are infinite ways to swing a golf club, but there is a most efficient way for each player.
Corrective Exercise
After we have identified the issue, we prescribe corrective exercise both to reduce pain and correct faulty movement patterns that caused the issue.
Regular Movement Screening
Movement screening is done at each visit to ensure your program includes appropriate corrective exercises.
Home Exercise Plan Updates
We progress your home program as appropriate to ensure you continue to build resilience against injury inducing movement patterns.
Michael's Take
Corrective exercise is essential for achieving long term resolution of an issue. Without prescription of corrective exercises, the effects of manual therapy would be short lived.
Personally, I regularly perform certain exercises to guard against injury in my golf swing and during running.
